On April 16, singer Sonu Nigam made a statement on Twitter against the use of loudspeakers for 'azaan', the call to prayer in mosques. His comments didn't go down well on the internet, where he was accused of being insensitive towards Muslims. On Tuesday, he posted another tweet saying that he stood by his earlier remarks.
Sonu Nigam tweeted :
Dear everyone. Your stand exposes your own IQ. I stand by my statement that loudspeakers should not be allowed in Mosques & Temples. Period
Sonu Nigam tweeted previously:
God bless everyone.
I'm not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India
And by the way Mohammed did not have electricity when he made Islam.. Why do I have to have this cacophony after Edison?
I don't believe in any temple or gurudwara using electricity To wake up people who don't follow the religion . Why then..? Honest? True?
Sonu then proceeded to retweet accounts and share links of articles that agreed with his statement.
His peers Shaan, Sona Mohapatra and Kailash Kher supported his stance.
