The Union health ministry has ordered an investigation into the reports of presence of cancer-causing chemicals in bread samples of most of the top brands in Delhi. Health Minister J P Nadda yesterday said, there is no need to panic and probe report will be released very soon. A recent study by Centre for Science and Environment, CSE said, bread samples of virtually all top brands in Delhi contain cancer-causing
chemicals.
In a report released yesterday, the CSE said, nearly 84 percent of 38 commonly available brands of pre-packaged breads including pav and buns, tested positive for hazardous potassium bromate and potassium iodate. Meanwhile, Food regulator FSSAI said, it has decided to remove potassium bromate from the list of permitted additives while it is examining evidence against potassium iodate before restricting its use.
