Bangladesh records 8,364 new Coronavirus cases on Monday

The COVID 19 situation in Bangladesh continued to be alarming with the highest number of single day infections being reported from the country on Monday.

According to the latest bulletin of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 8364 new corona positive cases were reported in the country which is the highest number since the pandemic was detected in March last year.  104 people died during the same period taking the death toll to 14,276. The sample positivity rate also climbed up to 23.86 percent, marking a rise from 21.59 percent on Sunday and 22.50 percent a day earlier.

Responding to the sharp uptick in the pandemic, the government of Bangladesh on Monday decided to enforce a seven day countrywide restriction from July 1. 

Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam told media that the armed forces, Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) and police will be engaged to enforce the restrictions. The details of



the countrywide restrictions will be issued on Tuesday.

The closure of the border for public movement with India has also been extended further for two weeks beyond June 30. The decision was taken in an inter-ministerial meeting chaired by the Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen on Monday. However, movement of cargo will be allowed during this period.

Meanwhile, Dhaka and other cities of the country reported partial implementation of the 3-day restriction imposed on movement of public transport and shut down of shops, malls and restaurants in the country which started on Monday. Public transport like buses were seen but the roads and streets of Dhaka were bustling with cars and other small vehicles. In cities like Pabna, a similar situation was reported. Large shopping centres, malls and some shops on the main roads were shut but most of the small shops were open like usual in the country.
