Bangladesh received no respite from the surging cases of COVID 19 in the country as it recorded the highest number of single day deaths on Sunday.

According to the latest release by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 119 people died and 5268 new cases of Corona infection were reported in Bangladesh over the last 24 hours. Earlier, the highest number of deaths in a single day was recorded on April 19 when 112 people had succumbed to Corona. The number of active cases in the country is more than 70,000.

The sample positivity rate also continued to be high at 21.59 percent, though it declined from 22.50 recorded on Saturday. More than 24,000 people were tested during this period taking the



total number of people tested for COVID 19 to over 65 lakh which is about 4 percent of the population of Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet Division of the government of Bangladesh issued a notification on Sunday suspending movement of all public transport except cargo vehicles and rickshaws across the country from Monday till the morning of 1st July. All shopping malls, markets, tourist places, resorts, community centres and recreation centres will also remain closed. Hotels and restaurants will be allowed to serve takeaways or take online orders from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Offices will remain open and the arrangement for transportation of their staff is to be made by the concerned organisation.
