Coronavirus cases in India crossed the 4 million mark on Friday as the country inched closer to closing the gap with Brazil, the second most affected nation from the virus.
The Union health ministry data, updated earlier in the day, had put the Covid-19 tally at 39,36,747. Since then data reported by the states has taken the figure past 40 lakh or 4 million. The government website is updated at 8 am every morning and will reflect the fresh figures on Saturday morning.
India has been reporting a significantly high number of Covid-19 cases on a daily basis. In the span of 24 hours ending Friday, 8 am, India reported 83,341 fresh cases. The death toll, by government figures, stands
at 68,472.
Over 30 lakh people in India have recovered from coronavirus, putting the recovery rate above 77 per cent. The Covid-19 case fatality rate has further declined to 1.74 per cent in the country, the Centre said on Friday.
India is currently the third worst-hit nation by the pandemic after the US and Brazil in terms of cases and deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University, which has been compiling Covid-19 data from all over the world. However, India is likely to take over Brazil soon, as, on Friday, we were just 60,000 cases behind Brazil. Additionally, India has been logging the world’s largest daily caseload every day for almost a month as the economy reopens.
