In Tamil Nadu, the number of people recovered from Covid-19 infection has crossed the three lakh mark. A bulletin released by the state health department yesterday said that the total number of positive cases has surged to over three lakh 61 thousand.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswamy has said, celebration of Vinayaka Chaturthi festival in public places could not be permitted this year due to the prevailing pandemic situation.
Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswamy has pointed out to the standard operating procedures issued by the Centre to justify his government’s decision to ban public installation of idols and their immersion in view of
the Vinayaga Chaturthi festival.
Talking to reporters in Vellore yesterday, he said the move is to contain the spread of the pandemic adding, the recent Madras High Court verdict vindicates the position. In a separate statement issued by the administration in Chennai, it is stressed that people should perform the Vinayaga Chaturthi puja and associated rituals within their homes this time. It also seeks the cooperation of all in this matter.
The appeal comes in the wake of the state BJP and a few other organizations pressing their demand to permit public functions connected with the festival.
