Toilet scrolling has become one of the first things we all do when we wake up in the morning and get into the washroom. It is now leading to major health concerns across the world.

Medical experts are sounding the alarm over an alarming increase in cases of hemorrhoids and anal fistulas among adults, attributing this trend to prolonged sitting on toilets while using mobile phones.

Dr. Jignesh Gandhi, a senior robotic and laparoscopic surgeon from Gleneagles, Mumbai, highlighted the issue during the 74th Foundation Day of ESIC Hospital, Okhla, emphasising the role of lifestyle habits and excessive phone usage in restrooms.

At ESIC Hospital, over 500 cases of hemorrhoids and fistulas were reported in a single year, according to Dr. Ravi Ranjan, a surgery specialist.

He noted that poor lifestyle choices, including low water intake, junk food consumption, and extended toilet time spent on mobile phones, are contributing factors.

Chronic constipation from poor diet and prolonged toilet sitting creates a vicious cycle, leading to painful inflammation that can result in hemorrhoids and even anal fistulas, explained Dr. Birbal from Marengo Asia Hospital.

Health professionals are urging individuals to adopt preventive

measures such as a fiber-rich diet, avoiding excessive toilet time, and staying hydrated.

Early intervention is crucial to prevent complications like anal fistulas, which may require surgical treatment if left untreated. The rising cases are straining government healthcare institutions, prompting experts to advocate for innovative treatment solutions like radiofrequency ablation of hemorrhoids under local anesthesia (Rafaelo).

This USFDA-approved procedure offers advantages such as reduced waiting times, same-day discharge, and faster recovery compared to traditional methods.

Innovative treatments like Rafaelo are particularly beneficial for treating Grade 2 and 3 hemorrhoids efficiently, allowing hospitals to accommodate more patients and decrease surgery backlogs.

Dr. Vani Vijay noted that radiofrequency treatment provides better control and improved patient outcomes compared to other methods. By adopting these innovative treatments, surgeons can significantly improve patient outcomes while alleviating pressure on India’s healthcare system.

With more widespread adoption, medical professionals believe they can make a substantial difference in patient care, ensuring timely and effective relief for those suffering from these painful conditions.
