Maharashtra yesterday reported three new suspected cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). According to the state’s public health department, a total of 173 suspected patients have been detected to date, out of which 140 patients have been confirmed to be suffering from GBS. While 72 of these patients have recovered, 55 patients are currently in ICU while 21 are on ventilator support.
Out of the six suspected deaths due to GBS, one person has been confirmed to have passed away due to the disease.
The majority of these cases have
been reported from Pune and its surrounding districts, including Pimpri and Chinchwad. The autoimmune disorder is characterised by sudden weakness in the hands or legs, sudden difficulty in walking, and diarrhoea. The health department has advised citizens not to panic and visit a hospital in case of any visible symptoms.
As a preventive measure, citizens are advised to drink clean and boiled drinking water, eat fresh food, and avoid stale and partially cooked food, especially poultry items and mutton.
