Today is Menstrual Hygiene Day, a global movement for shattering stigmas and advocating for accessible menstrual hygiene management for all. This year’s theme, “Period Friendly World” emphasizes the collective effort required to ensure everyone who menstruates has the resources and knowledge to manage their periods with dignity.
The day was initiated by German-based NGO-WASH United in 2013 to address the staggering reality that millions around the world lack access to safe and affordable menstrual products, sanitation facilities, and proper hygiene education. This can have severe consequences, impacting not only physical health but also education and social participation. Menstrual Hygiene Day unites a diverse group of organizations, governments, and individuals. Since its inception, Menstrual Hygiene
Day has grown from a small gathering to a global phenomenon.
In India too, the government has taken several steps to promote menstrual hygiene. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has introduced a scheme for promotion of menstrual hygiene among adolescent girls in the age group of 10-19 years in rural areas. Funds are being provided to States and Union Territories under National Health Mission for decentralized procurement of sanitary napkin packs for rural adolescent girls at a subsidized rate of rupees six.
A range of information, education, and communication material has been developed, using a 360-degree approach to create awareness among adolescent girls about safe and hygienic menstrual health practices.
