Lucknow, March 15: Raj Babbar has on Wednesday offered to resign from the post of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president after the Congress was badly defeated in the UP assembly election. The Congress performed very badly despite allying with the Samajwadi Party.
Raj Babbar said that he was not able to successfully fulfil the responsibilities that he was assigned with and he was ready to take responsibility of the poor show by his party in UP. After the results were declared he had told reporters that the alliance had tried to defeat the BJP but they were not successful in it and that gadha pehlwan ho gaya (Thanks to good luck undeserving
won).
In the recent election, the Congress could just win seven seats of the 105 seats it contested. In 2012 the Congress had won 28 seats and the party has been out of power from UP since 28 years.
Interestingly, Babbar, after the conclusion of the election campaigning in UP on March 8, had said that Congress-SP alliance has given a united and fierce fight to the BJP. He had confidently added that 'Our sixer shot is reserved for the 2019 match.'
The election results, however, went overwhelmingly to the BJP's favour and the Congress is facing aggressive resentment from party members for the debacle in elections since 2014 Lok Sabha election.
