A member of the Indian women’s 4x100m relay team is set to be withdrawn from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The unnamed player was tested positive for a banned drug.

After the latest development, the relay team has been left with only four members. If the team faces an injury concern during the tournament, a member from other events may have to be drafted in.

"A member of the relay team bound for CWG has tested positive and she will be withdrawn," a top official was quoted as saying to PTI.

Earlier, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) had earlier named Srabani Nanda, Hima Das, Dutee Chand, MV Jilna, Sekar Dhanalakshmi and NS Simi in the national squad for the championship.

Jilna pulled out of the tournament, but later added

as a replacement for Dhanalakshmi, who also failed a dope test.

Previously, triple jumper Aishwarya Babu was also dropped from the team after testing positive twice for banned substances.

Para discus thrower Aneesh Kumar and para powerlifter Geeta also returned positive tests for banned substances.

A source from the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) told that Kumar tested positive because of a medicine he took for high blood pressure.

“Aneesh has informed the NADA that the substance found in his sample was due to the medicine he took for blood pressure,” the PCI source said.

“Since he was not handed provisional suspension, we are hoping that he will be cleared for CWG. However, Geeta cannot go for CWG,” the source claimed.
