India’s Ajay Jayaram on Friday was knocked out of the Swiss Open 2021 tournament after he lost in straight games to Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
A day after a stunning victory in which he defeated World No. 12 Rasmus Gemke 21-18, 17-21, 21-13 to advance into the quarterfinals, Ajay was a mere shadow of himself as he could only muster a 9-21, 6-21 defeat to Vitidsarn in only 29 minutes.
The eighth seeded Thai player was too good for Jayaram on the day and there wasn’t
much of a competition from the Indian star, who perhaps was tired from his long game just a day earlier.
The mixed doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa showed top-notch fighting spirit before going down to World No 13 -Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing of Malaysia in three sets 17-21, 21-16, 18-21.
Satwiksairaj and Ashwini had staged the comeback after being losing the first set but the Malaysian duo diffused the Indian attack to seal a place in the semi-finals.
