Former tennis star Sania Mirza has opened up on her unachieved ambitions, saying an Olympic medal would have completed her career. Mirza recently brought the curtain down on her career, playing her last match in the Dubai Tennis Championship.
Speaking exclusively to India Today, Mirza said winning an Olympic medal for India would have completed her career, but insisted that she is very grateful for her career.
“I’ve been able to achieve and live a lot of my dreams. An Olympic medal would have made everything complete in my career. I came very close in 2016 in Rio but besides that I’m very grateful,” said Mirza.
She said that an athlete is always greedy and wants to push the boundaries, adding that if someone had told her when she was a kid that she would be world number 1 one day, she would have
grabbed that opportunity with both hands.
“An athlete is always greedy and that is why we always keep playing. I’m very proud of the things I’ve been able to achieve. If 30 years ago, someone told a six-year-old that I’m going to be number 1 in the world, I would have grabbed that opportunity by both hands,” Mirza added.
Mirza said she had to make her own way since there weren’t any role models for her to look up to while growing up as a budding tennis player.
“For me, there was no one that I could look up to and say ‘I want to be like that person’. I had to make my own way and find my own path. We took so much pride in every achievement and step that we took. My goals kept changing throughout my career. Did I want to get to top-10 in singles, 100%. But you can’t get everything,” said Mirza.
