World number five Ons Jabeur registered a straight-sets win over American Elizabeth Mandlik. Tunisian Jabeur won 7-5 6-2. She will next face Shelby Rogers, who defeated Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova 7-5, 6-1.
Earlier, Naomi Osaka and Emma Raducanu crashed out of the US Open women's singles first round. Osaka was beaten by American Danielle Collins while defending champion Emma Raducanu fell to Alizé Cornet in straight sets.
