London: In Wimbledon tennis, world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty made short work of Ajla Tomljanovic in a clash of two Australian players to enter her maiden semi-final with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-3. Ashleigh will now take on 2018 winner Angelique Kerber of Germany, who defeated 19th seed Karolina Muchova of Czech Republic 6-2, 6-3.
Earlier, second seed Aryna Sabalenka ended the fairy-tale run of upcoming Tunisian star Ons Jabeur, winning 6-4, 6-3 in their quarter-final. She will now meet eighth seed Karolina Pliskova, who outplayed Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland 6-2, 6-2 to make the last-four stage.
In the men’s section, top seed Novak Djokovic
continued his bid for a record-equalling 20th men’s Grand Slam title with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 win against Chile’s Cristian Garin to ease into the quarterfinals.
Eight-time champion Roger Federer later won 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego.
Italian Matteo Berrettini cruised into the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ilya Ivashka.
Earlier, world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev of Russia kept his composure and raised his level to overcome 2017 finalist Marin Cilic of Croatia 6-7 (3), 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 and reach the fourth round for the first time.
