Commonwealth Games:Shooter Mitherwal gets bronze in 50-meter air pistol event

India will look to increase its medal tally on the 7th day of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast today with several big stars in action for the country. 

The day started with 2O12 London Olympic Bronze medal winner in boxing Mary Kom entering the women’s 48 kg final. She defeated Sri Lanka’s Anusha Koddithuwakku in the first semi-final. 

Jitu Rai who won gold two days ago in the Men's 10-meter air pistol event, was today eliminated in the Men's 50-meter pistol event. However, the other Indian contender in the same event Om Prakash Mitharwal won bronze in the same event. Two days ago also, Mitharwal had won a bronze for India in men's 10-meter air pistol. 

In women's singles table tennis group matches today, Maitreyee Sarkar beat Papua New Guinea's Vero Nime 11-2, 11-9, 11-2. In badminton, star shuttlers Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth will begin their quest for individual medals after the mixed team gold. Another medal prospect Ankur Mittal also compete in Men’s Double Trap event and look to earn a podium finish. 

High jumper Tejashwini Shankar will look to get India its first medal in Athletics this



year. Having already qualified for the semi-final, India will take on England in the last B group match of Men's Hockey.India women’s hockey team defeated South Africa 1-0 in its final Pool A game yesterday. Following the result, India remained second in the Pool A with nine points -- same as top-placed England, but behind on goal difference.

Day 6 yesterday saw India add only two medals with Heena Sidhu winning a gold in shooting while Sachin Chaudhary adding a bronze in para weightlifting. With this, India is placed third in the overall medal tally with 21 honours, comprising 11 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze. 

Hosts Australia continues to occupy top position in the medal tally with 131 honours, including 50 gold followed by England with 76 medals, including 25 gold.

President Ram Nath Kovind has congratulated shooter Om Mitharval on winning the bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games. He said in a Twitter message, very happy to learn that Om Mitharval has won the Bronze in the Men's 50m Pistol event. Congratulations to him for his second medal at the games. He said our shooters continue to make us proud.
