New Zealand performed like a well-oiled machine in the second game of the 3-match T20I series to crush West Indies by 72 runs and take a 2-0 unbeatable series lead in Mount Maunganui on Sunday.
Glenn Phillips scored the fastest T20I hundred for New Zealand as the hosts plundered 238-3 and then restricted Kieron Pollard-led West Indies to 166/9. West Indies kept losing wickets at regular intervals in their chase and could only reach 166 for nine.
Phillips hit his century off just 46 deliveries, the 10th fastest in the world and one ball faster than the previous New Zealand record held by Colin Munro. Phillips had scored 108 off 51 balls, with eight sixes and 10 fours before getting dismissed on the penultimate
delivery of the New Zealand innings.
West Indies, who lost the first match by five wickets and need a win to keep the three-match series alive, opted to bowl first on winning the toss. Phillips and newcomer Devon Conway (65 not out off 37) put on 184 for the third wicket as the visiting bowlers wilted under pressure.
"It was absolutely brilliant," Phillips told the host broadcaster during the innings break.
"Dev is an absolutely amazing player to play with and keeps you calm under pressure. To be a part of a partnership that big is just unbelievable. It was a lot of fun."
The third and final T20 will be played at the same venue on Monday before the sides play a two-test series starting Thursday in Hamilton.
