Nine runs were needed off the last 6 balls but South Africa Women and Laura Wolvaardt held their nerves to win the match on the last ball and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series versus India Women on Sunday.
Unlike Saturday, India Women showed character but failed to emerge victorious in the high-pressure 2nd ODI in Lucknow on Sunday. Opene Lizelle Lee (70) and Laura Wolvaardt (53*) shined in their team's 6-wicket win over Smriti Mandhana's team.
Lee and Wolvaardt's third wicket partnership of 50 runs took the match completely away from India Women before Radha Yadav breathed some life into the match by dismissing the former.
When Harleen Deol scalped the wicket of Mignon du Preez on the 2nd ball of the 19th over, South Africa Women needed 19 runs off 10 balls
but Wolvaardt showed great character and scored back-to-back boundaries on the last 2 balls of the same over.
In the final over, the pair took 4 singles off the first 4 balls, before stealing a double on a no ball and then again running a double to level the 158-run total from India Women.
On the last ball from Arundhati Reddy, Wolvaardt got an inside edge as the ball went between her legs towards short fine leg. That was enough for her to run a single and destroy India's resilience.
Earlier, after being put in to bat first India lost the wicket of captain Smriti Mandhana (7) early but Shafali Verma and Harleen Deol partnered for 79 runs to bring India Women on track. Shafali Verma was at her attacking best as she smashed 47 off 31 balls before departing on the final ball of 11th over.
