South Africa captain Temba Bavuma said adaptability is the key to success after their thumping win over Sri Lanka in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 102 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Speaking after the match, Bavuma said it was a good toss to lose, adding that the individuals did well against Sri Lanka. South Africa lost the toss and were put to bat first. They went on to scored 428 runs, the highest total in the history of ODI World Cups.

“Happy that we won the game in the end. Individually, we did well. Three centuries for us and then the bowlers executed their job well. It was a good toss to lose. We timed the balls well and placed the gap and we did that. I think the conditions were variable,” said Bavuma.

He went on to say that they had to adjust to the conditions, insisting that adaptability is the key to success in the World Cup. The

South African batters, namely Rassie van der Dussen, Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram scored centuries, the most by a team in one innings in the World Cup.

“We had to adjust the conditions and we had preconceived notions. Adaptability is the key to success as far as I am concerned,” Bavuma added.

Bavuma said De Kock should be fine for the next match, stressing that they will have to adjust to different conditions in their upcoming matches. De Kock did not take the field in the second injury, raising concerns over his availability for the rest of the tournament.

“Quinton is fine and should be fine for the next match. Different conditions in the next game and we have to be at our best,” said Bavuma.

Having defeated Sri Lanka, South Africa will shift their focus towards 5-time champions Australia with the two sides set to clash at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on October 12.
