Stuart Broad's fiery spell on day four has given England the edge heading into the final day of the first Ashes 2023 Test at Edgbaston on Monday with Australia needing another xxx runs to win the match.

Broad picked up the big wickets of Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith as the Aussies will pin their hopes on Usman Khawaja in their chase of 281 runs and go 1-0 up in the series.

England had started day four with 28 runs on the board for the loss of two wickets. They had lost both Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett on day three, as rain played a big role in the proceedings on Sunday.

The hosts needed to post a big total and possibly even look at a declaration to ensure that they had the upper hand in the match to get the win on the final day at Edgbaston on Tuesday.

Joe Root, who faced some tough deliveries towards the end of day three, decided to take the attack to the Australian bowlers, hinting at his intentions with a reverse scoop of the first

delivery.

The former England captain would be lucky later on in the day as he started to pile on the runs for the hosts as they got off to a very strong start on Monday. Pat Cummins would end the stay of Ollie Pope but Root decided to continue on his merry way.

Root was joined by Harry Brook, who played his natural aggressive game as a big total was on the cards for England. Before lunch, Nathan Lyon provided the wickets of both men as England ended the first session with 127 runs added to the total.

Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow had a 46-run partnership before Lyon struck once again to bring the Aussies back into the contest. Cummins would dismiss his England counterpart soon after as England slipped to 210 for seven.

Some useful contributions from the tail, including Ollie Robinson, who scored 27 off 44 deliveries, came in handy for the hosts as their innings came to a close at 273, setting Australia a target of 280. Cummins was the pick of the bowlers for the Aussies with four wickets to his name.
