India reclaimed their top spot in the points table for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 after beating Australia by 295 runs in the opening Test at the Perth Stadium. India had lost the top spot after losing the Mumbai Test against Tom Latham’s New Zealand, but they managed to go back atop with a dominating performance at the Optus Stadium.
India currently have 110 points from 15 matches with a points' percentage of 61.11. Australia, on the other hand, slipped to the second spot in the table with 90 points and a points' percentage of 57.69 thanks to wins in eight out of 13 Tests. Sri Lanka, New Zealand, South Africa and England are third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the list respectively.
After losing 0-3 to the Black Caps, India’s road to the WTC final became tough. They had to beat the Aussies by a margin of 4-0 to go
through to the summit clash next year without having to depend on other results. Having won the first Test, India will be looking to carry the momentum in the second Test, starting December 6 at the Adelaide Oval.
With their backs against the wall, India came out firing in Perth. After batting first, they were bowled out for 150 in their first innings. But Jasprit Bumrah, the stand-in skipper in the absence of Rohit Sharma, picked up five wickets to help India take a lead of 46 runs.
Thereafter, Yashasvi Jaiswal notched his fourth Test hundred, after which Virat Kohli stormed to his 30th century in the purest format. Chasing a target of 534, Australia were bowled out for 238.
Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj accounted for three scalps apiece. Bumrah also won the Player of the Match award for his stupendous spell of bowling.
