Shakib Al Hasan was the star of the evening as Bangladesh delivered a shock defeat to England at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. Bangladesh beat England by 50 runs but ended up losing the three-match ODI series 1-2.
Tamim Iqbal won the toss for Bangladesh and elected to bat first. The hosts got off to a slow start with opener Litton Das losing his wicket to Sam Curran in the very first over. Curran came back to pick up his second wicket in the third over, sending Tamim back to the pavilion, leaving the hosts reeling at 17/2.
However, a brilliant 98-run partnership between 24-year-old Najmul Shanto and veteran wicket-keeping batter Mushfiqur Rahim got Bangladesh back in the game. Shanto scored his second ODI half-century before being run-out by Rehan Ahmed. Soon, Mushfiqur followed Shanto back to the pavilion after being cleaned up by spinner Adil Rashid. Mushfiqur scored 70 runs 93 balls, hitting six boundaries on the way.
Former Bangladesh captain Shakib al Hasan was looking good but wickets kept tumbling around him. Mahmudullah was the next to fall, as Rashid bundled him over after scoring 8 runs off 9 deliveries. Fast-bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes then got rid of Afif Hussain before Rehan Ahmed caught and
bowled Mehidy Hasan soon after.
Shakib went on to hit his 52nd ODI half-century, scoring 75 runs off 71 balls before being dismissed by Jofra Archer. The England pacer then cleaned up Bangladesh’s tail as they finished with 246 runs on the scoreboard after 48.5 overs.
In the second innings, England got off to a brisk start with openers Phil Salt and Jason Roy combining for a 54-run partnership for the first wicket. But three quick wickets turned the ride of the game in Bangladesh’s favor. England lost the wickets of Salt, Dawid Malan and Roy in a space of eight balls.
Then, Curran alongside James Vince stitched a well-paced 49-run stand before Mehidy Hasan sent Curran packing. Shakib then removed Vince after scoring 38 runs off 44 balls. Moeen Ali couldn’t move the scoreboard much and was cleaned up by Ebadot Hussain, before Jos Buttler lost his wicket after scoring 26 runs off 24 balls.
Woakes made a late push for the visitors but couldn’t drag England over the line as the visitors were bowled out for 196 runs, falling short by 50 runs. Shakib was the pick of the bowlers, claiming four wickets and giving away 35 runs in 10 overs. Despite the loss, England went on to win the three-match ODI series 2-1.
