Bangladesh have won 13 out of their last 15 bilateral ODI series at home since November 2014. And both the series they lost in the last nine years were against England.
Since October 2016, the Tigers stamped their authority in home ODIs by winning seven bilateral series at home. However, England ended their dream run after they won the second ODI by 132 runs on Friday, March 3 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.
The first game in Dhaka went right down to the wire where Dawid Malan saved the day for the visitors with his fourth ODI hundred. But the second game turned out to be a completely one-sided affair.
Once Sam Curran picked up three wickets and reduced Bangladesh to 9 for 3 in 2.2 overs while they were chasing 327, the writing was on the walls for the home team.
Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah tried to restore sanity to their innings with a partnership of 79 runs for the fourth wicket. Shakib had an off-day with the ball after he leaked 64 runs, but he looked the best of the Bangladeshi batters, having scored 58 runs with five fours.
Tamim Iqbal,
Mahmudullah and Afif Hossain Dhrubo scored 35, 32 and 23 respectively, but they failed to make their starts count and get big scores.
After Curran, who picked up four wickets, wreaked havoc with the new ball, Adil Rashid stepped up and ran through the middle-order. Rashid finished with figures of 10-0-45-4. Moeen Ali got the all-important wicket of Tamim.
Earlier, after being put in to bat first, Jason Roy laid the platform for England by scoring 132 runs off 124 balls with the help of 18 fours. Although the likes of Phil Salt, Dawid Malan and James Vince failed to get going, Roy made sure to hold one end up.
Jos Buttler scored 76 off 64 before a brilliant caught and bowled from Mehidy Hasan Miraz led to his downfall. Moeen Ali and Sam Curran played handy cameos of 42 and 33 not out respectively and took England’s score past the 300-run mark.
Taskin Ahmed was exceptional in the first ODI, but he was expensive in the second game, albeit he picked up three wickets.
The third and final ODI is scheduled to take place on Monday and Bangladesh will be looking to avoid a series whitewash.
