The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Tuesday, named Tata as the title sponsors for the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). TATA, thereby, happens to be title sponsors, now for both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the WPL.
The tender documents for bagging the title rights were up for grabs until February 9 and as per a BCCI statement, "The detailed terms and conditions governing the tender process including eligibility requirements, process for submissions of bids, rights and obligations of the title sponsor, etc. are contained in the 'Request for Proposal' ("RFP") which will be made available on receipt of payment of a non-refundable fee of INR 1,00,000 (Indian Rupees One Lakh Only) plus any applicable Goods and Services Tax. The procedure to procure the RFP documents is enlisted in Annexure A to this notice. The RFP will be available for purchase till February 9, 2023."
If reports are to be
believed, TATA Sons will have the title rights for the five years of the tournament. Earlier, Tata had become title sponsors of the IPL after VIVO backed out.
As far as the inaugural edition of the WPL is concerned, it is scheduled to get underway on Saturday, March 4. The opening game will be played between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai.
UP Warriorz, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals are the other three teams in the championship along with GG and MI.
20 matches in the league stage will be played, followed by the Eliminator on March 24. The final is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 26 at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
Earlier this month, the auction for the tournament and Indian top-order batter Smriti Mandhana became the most expensive player. Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner and England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt also fetched decent deals.
