The year 2019 wasn’t a great one for the South Africa national cricket team and also the Cricket South Africa (CSA) board. While the national team lost a Test series at home at the hands of Sri Lanka followed by a shameful World Cup exit, the maladministration of the board was surfacing. In December 2019, Cricket South Africa CEO Thabang Moroe was suspended, with full pay, due to allegations of misconduct. Jacques Faul, who has now quit his position, was appointed as the acting CEO.

On Thursday, August 27, CSA confirmed that the board of directors has voted for immediate termination of suspended CEO Thabang Moroe.

The official statement released by CSA said: “Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced today that its board of directors (the “Board”) resolved to terminate the employment of Mr. Thabang Moroe as Cricket South Africa’s Chief Executive Officer. The

termination of employment is with immediate effect.”

“Cricket South Africa’s decision was based on expert legal opinion supported by the findings emanating from an independent forensic investigation. The independent forensic investigation revealed that Mr. Thabang Moroe had conducted acts of serious misconduct which warranted the sanction of dismissal.

“Mr Thabang Moroe was offered sufficient opportunity to provide representations to the independent forensic auditors and to the Board regarding the allegations of misconduct, which opportunity he failed and/or refused to utilise,” it added.

With Jacques Faul’s recent departure as acting CEO, CSA commercial chief Kugandrie Govender has taken up the role in an acting capacity. CSA President Chris Nenzani also resigned, bringing his seven-year tenure, full of corruption allegations, to an untimely end.
