In the second match of Saturday's double-header, Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Delhi Capitals by 16 runs at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Dinesh Karthik and Glenn Maxwell's brilliant batting, Josh Hazlewood's three-wicket haul and Mohammed Siraj's brace helped RCB get better of DC.
Put to bat first, RCB got off to a nightmarish start, losing captain Faf du Plessis and his opening partner Anuj Rawat at the very onset of their innings. Former skipper Virat Kohli failed once again as he was run out by Lalit Yadav in the seventh over.
It was then Glenn Maxwell (55 off 34) who provided RCB with hope. Maxwell hit two sixes and seven boundaries to lay the foundation of the RCB innings. The Australian smashed Kuldeep for 23 runs in the ninth over to take the onus on himself.
After Maxwell was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav, Shahbaz Ahmed (32 off 21) and Dinesh Karthik (66 off 34 not out) shared a 97 runs partnership off 52 balls to help RCB post a massive 189 for 5 on the board in 20 overs. The wicketkeeper made batting look effortless as he cracked four
boundaries and two maximum off Mustafizur to plunder 28 runs off the 18th over and bring his fifty in style.
Kuldeep Yadav conceded 46 runs in four overs while Mustafizur Rahman went wicketless while conceding 48 runs in four overs. Shardul Thakur, Khaleel Ahmed and Axar Patel took a wicket each.
In reply, DC got off to a flying start from opening batter David Warner, who scored 66 off 38 balls. Warner smashed five sixes and four boundaries during his whirlwind knock. However, his dismissal by Wanindu Hasaranga in the 12th over slowed down DC's innings. Mitchell Marsh, who made his debut for DC on Saturday, fell to a scorching thrower from Hasaranga while opening batter Prithvi Shaw was the first man to fall to Mohammed Siraj.
Captain Rishabh Pant showed hope with a blistering 34 off 17 balls which featured two sixes and three boundaries. But his innings was cut short by Siraj as Kohli caught him.
After Pant's fall, it was all over for DC, with Lalit Yadav failing again while Thakur was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood for 17 off 9 balls.
