England batter Harry Brook, who was part of the Delhi Capitals side, has pulled out of the IPL 2024 because his grandmother died in February, and he wants to be with his family during their grief. Brook also withdrew from England's recent five-Test series in India from January to March after attending a pre-tour training camp in the UAE. He abandoned the team in the UAE and did not fly to Hyderabad for the first match.
"I can confirm that I have made the very difficult decision not to play in the upcoming IPL," Brook said in a statement.
"I was so excited to be picked by Delhi Capitals and was so looking forward to joining up with
everyone. Whilst I don't think I should need to share my personal reasons behind this decision, I know there will be many asking why. So I do want to share this," Brook added.
Brook announced his decision 10 days ahead of the Delhi Capitals' match against the Punjab Kings at the Mullanpur Stadium on March 23. He was signed for Rs 4 crore in the IPL 2024 mini-auction last December. The 25-year-old made his IPL debut for the Sunrisers Hyderabad as they broke the bank for him by spending Rs 13.25 crore. Brook could manage to score only 190 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 123.37 and the highlight of his season was a 55-ball 100 against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
