A Delhi Court granted interim bail to Olympian wrestler Sushil Kumar, who was charged in the death of Junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar with murder, attempted murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, and other sections including criminal conspiracy. The Rohini district court ordered the release of Sushil on interim bail till 12.11.2022 on his furnishing personal bond in the sum of Rs 1 Lakh with two sureties in the like amount.
While ordering bail on the bail application of Sushil Kumar on humanitarian grounds for the treatment of his wife, the Rohini Court said that at least two security personnel shall be present with him around the clock to keep vigil over the applicant/accused.
As deploying two security personnel would incur additional expenditure on the concerned authority, it is directed that amount of Rs.10,000/- per day will be borne by the applicant/accused for the deployment of security persons/policemen for keeping surveillance over the activities
of the applicant/accused and also for the security of the applicant/accused. The amount of Rs 10,000 (Ten Thousand) per day be deposited with the Jail Superintendent concerned in advance.
The court had framed charges against Gaurav Laura, Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar and 15 others on October 12 under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code for the murder of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar.
Kumar and his associates allegedly assaulted 23-year-old wrestler Sagar Dhankar, his friend Sonu and three others at the stadium on the intervening night of May 4 and 5 over a property dispute. Later, Sagar succumbed to his injuries.
According to the police, the deceased wrestler, 23-year-old Sagar Dhankad, used to earlier live in the flat in Model Town which is owned by Kumar. The two wrestlers had an ongoing dispute over the rent of the flat which snowballed into a fatal brawl after Dhankad abused Kumar.
