Former India cricketer-turned politician Chetan Chauhan was cremated in Garhmukteshwar in the Harpur district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday, August 17. The last rites of the cricketer who died on Sunday after suffering a cardiac arrest was performed with state honours.
The Uttar Pradesh government declared state mourning on Monday over the death of Chetan Chauhan. He was admitted to the Medanta Hospital in Gurugram and was put on ventilator support after he developed kidney and blood pressure issues on Friday.
Chauhan, who served as a cabinet minister in the Uttar Pradesh state government, had tested positive for the novel coronavirus in July due to which his condition worsened. He is
survived by his wife and son Vinayak.
Chauhan's body was taken to his residence in Mayur Vihar on Tuesday before cremation. The funeral was attended by several bureaucrats and a sizeable crowd gathered to pay their last respects, according to the Press Trust of India.
Chauhan was known for his gutsy approach to opening batting for India. He was known for his opening partnerships with batting great Sunil Gavaskar in Tests, scoring over 3000 runs together, including 10 century partnerships.
Chauhan played 40 Tests between 1969 and 1978 and scored 2084 runs at an average of 31.57 with 97 being his highest score. He also played in seven ODIs, scoring 153 runs from them.
