India's former hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh was conferred with the Padma Bhushan while R Ashwin and football legend IM Vijayan were given the Padma Shri awards on Saturday, January 25. Harvinder Singh and Satyapal Singh were the others to be conferred with Padma Shri awards on the eve of Republic Day.

Sreejesh played an integral role in India's second consecutive bronze medal at the Olympics last year. The goalkeeper announced his retirement from the sport ahead of the event in Paris, and went on to produce some crucial moments for his side during the tournament, including the shootout win against Great Britain. Following his retirement, Sreejesh was appointed as the head coach of India's junior's men team.

Ashwin was given the Padma Shri award for his contributions in cricket. The off-spinner retired from the game in 2024 in the middle of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, bringing down on the curtains on a glittering career. Ashwin played 106 Tests and is the leading wicket-taker for India in the format with 537 scalps to his name.

Another winner of the Padma Shri award was IM Vijayan, who was one of India's greatest footballers of all time. The former Kerala forward also served



as India's captain during 2000-2004. Vijayan went on to score 29 international goals for India in 72 appearances.

Earlier on in the day, it was revealed that Paralympian and 2024 Paralympics gold medal winner Harvinder Singh was in line to receive the Padma Shri. Harvinder defeated Poland's Lukasz Ciszek in the final of the Men's Individual Recurve Open to secure India's 4th gold medal at the Paris Paralympics 2024.

The Padma Awards, one of India’s most prestigious civilian honors, are conferred in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. These accolades celebrate outstanding contributions across diverse fields such as arts, social service, public affairs, science and technology, commerce, medicine, and literature, among others. Ranked as the fourth-highest civilian award in India, the Padma Shri follows the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, and Padma Bhushan in terms of hierarchy.
