India star Virat Kohli shone on his return to his hometown, Delhi, to hit his second successive fifty in the ongoing World Cup and guide his team to a convincing 8-wicket win over Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday. Kohli was unbeaten at 55 as India chased down the 273-run target with 15 overs to spare in Delhi.
Following a remarkable 85-run inning against Australia in India's first match of the ongoing World Cup, Kohli scored another resounding fifty against Afghanistan to further assert his dominance in the tournament. Kohli was in the thick of things in India's opener against Australia in Chennai, scoring a brilliant 85 to help India resurrect a difficult 200-run chase with a stoic partnership with KL Rahul.
Before this, Kohli had played seven ODIs in Delhi during his illustrious
282-match ODI career. Kohli did not bat in his first appearance at the Kotla, which was a no-result game against Sri Lanka in 2009. Kohli played his second ODI in Delhi during the 2011 World Cup. Kohli was dismissed for 12 in the venue's match against the Netherlands, but India eventually won by five wickets in a 190-run chase.
It didn't take long for Kohli to light up his hometown when he hit an unbeaten 112 off 98 balls against England in October 2011. India won by eight wickets, and Kohli was named the Player of the Match. Kohli has only managed one fifty-plus score in his subsequent four appearances at the venue (62 v West Indies). Kohli was bowled out for 20 against Australia in his last ODI in Delhi in 2019. Back in his hometown, Kohli made his mark once again with a delightful unbeaten 55-run knock as he scored his 68th ODI fifty.
