India's young batting sensation Shubman Gill finally slammed his first hundred in One Day internationals on Monday as India positioned themselves in a strong position against Zimbabwe in the third and final ODI.
Gill has been in sparking form recently, with his exploits during the West Indies tour earning him the Man Of The Series award during the three-match ODI series. The 22-year-old was close to getting to the magical three-figure mark during the final match against the West Indies. However, rain played spoilsport and he was stranded unbeaten on 98 runs.
But the Indian star wouldn't be denied on Monday against Zimbabwe as he was in fine touch from the get-go. Gill came into bat when skipper KL Rahul was dismissed with the score at 63 in 15 overs. The visitors would then lose Shikhar Dhawan as well and were reduced to 84 for two.
Gill found a reliable partner in Ishan Kishan as both men navigated through the tough period and launched a counter attack on the Zimbabwean bowling to give India the initiative in the match. Kishan
scored a well-made fifty before being run out.
The 22-year-old looked in fine touch as he took on the bowling and scored boundaries at will to keep the run rate high.
Gill's innings consisted of 12 boundaries and he reached the landmark in just 82 deliveries.
The right-handed batter then kicked on and pushed the Indian innings towards a strong score with some big shots. His innings finally came to an end at 130 runs and his knock consisted of 15 boundaries and one six in just 96 deliveries.
The series has been a successful one for the right-handed batter as he was unbeaten on 82 in the first match on 18th August. In the second ODI, the 22-year-old was forced to relinquish his opening slot to skipper Rahul and he came in at the No.3 position for the team. He once again impressed and scored 33 runs in the match.
His maiden hundred on Monday was surely the icing on the cake for the Indian star as he has positioned himself as a competitor for two major batting slots in the Indian ODI squad.
