India has officially sent a proposal to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games at Ahmedabad in Gujarat. According to reports, the letter of interest was sent by PT Usha, the chief of the Commonwealth Games Association of India on March 13. The idea behind hosting the event is to bring the Olympic Games to India in 2036. Meanwhile, the last day to submit the bid is March 31. Ahead of that, the CGF has acknowledged receiving the letter from Usha.
India has also shown interest in hosting all the events that have been dropped from the Commonwealth Games Glasgow in 2026. It means shooting, hockey, wrestling, badminton, archery and squash could be part of the mega event and it won’t be surprising if India’s Commonwealth association brings back Cricket, which was hosted by Birmingham in 2022.
The
Commonwealth Games Federation president Chris Jenkins and Chief Executive Officer Katie Sadleir visited Gujarat visit in January to discuss the probability of organising the event, which India hosted back in 2010 in New Delhi. They also discussed the National Games that was hosted in Uttarakhand.
During the meeting, Usha highlighted Ahmedabad’s contribution to hosting major sporting events, including the ODI World Cup 2023 final, which hosted almost a lakh and recently, the Coldplay concert.
On the other hand, the Commonwealth board had a rough time figuring out the future as many of the host cities backed out due to rising costs in organising and its economical impact. This came after Singapore and Malaysia showed interest in hosting the Commonwealth Games but backed out due to financial constraints.
