India dropped to the 4th spot on the World Test Championship table after they were penalised for slow over-rate in the rescheduled 5th Test against England in Birmingham. India were fined 40 percent of their match fee and docked 2 points from their WTC 2021-23 cycle Tuesday, July 5.
India missed out on an opportunity to win their first Test series in England in 2007 as they squandered a 2-1 lead with England leveling the series after their stunning victory in Birmingham. England chased down 378, the 8th highest successful chase in the history of Test cricket, with 7 wickets to spare as they rode on unbeaten hundreds from Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root in the final innings.
After India were docked
2 points, Pakistan have leapfrogged the Asian giants to the 3rd spot. After the penalty, India are on 75 points (point percentage of 52.08), just a shade below Pakistan's PCT of 52.38 percent.
Notably, Pakistan lost their only Test series of the year so far to Australia (0-1) at home. Babar Azam's men will have an opportunity to extend the lead over India when they take on Sri Lanka in a 2-Test series in the island nation in July.
India lost the 5th Test to England in Birmingham despite taking a 132-run lead in the first innings. The losing finalists of last year's World Test Championship cycle were not able to contain the English batters, who thrived on the much-talked-about "Bazball" approach.
