It was expected to be a classic David vs Goliath battle when West Indies locked horns with India in the first Test of the three-match series in Rajkot and that's what it exactly turned out to be. In what was a totally one-sided contest, India comprehensively outclassed the visitors by an innings and 272 runs to register their biggest Test win ever. India's previous biggest win came against Afghanistan by an innings and 262 runs in the one-off Test earlier this year.
India produced a flawless all-round performance to shrug-off the England horror and kick-start the series on a winning note. After batsmen piled up a staggering 649/9 in the first innings, Indian bowlers ensured that they took less than 100 overs to bundle out the visitors twice and seal the deal. Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Shannon Gabriel post tea on day three in Rajkot to put the final nail in the coffin.
Debutant Prithvi Shaw had a magical debut in the whites for India as he notched up his maiden Test ton on the first day of the Rajkot Test. He announced his arrival in international cricket in style with a
flamboyant 134 laced with 19 boundaries. Indian skipper Virat Kohli too continued his magnificent run from the England series as he slammed his 24th Test century in stellar fashion. Kohli struck 139 off 230 deliveries to set the stage for a big total.
Ravindra Jadeja, who had a stunning return to ODI cricket in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2018, continued his fine form as he smacked his maiden hundred in international cricket. His 100 off 132 deliveries took India to a staggering 649/9, a total which proved too much for Windies. Indian bowlers were magnificent throughout the game as they never let Windies take control of the chase.
In the first innings, Windies were jolted by Mohammed Shami who sent back the openers cheaply to get India off to a strong start with the ball. Kuldeep, Ashwin and Jadeja also picked a wicket each as Windies finished day 2 on 94/6. Ashwin then dominated the proceedings on the third day of the Test match as he completed his 42nd 4-wicket haul. The visitors were bundled out on 181 in the first innings with the target still a daunting task.
