India’s ODI squad for the series against South Africa was announced yesterday. Opener K. L. Rahul will lead the team in absence of injured Rohit Sharma. Jasprit Bumrah has been named the vice-captain. While Virat Kohli has been in the squad as a player, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has roared back into the limited-overs format and has been picked in the ODI side for the first time since 2017. Wrist spinners Yuzvendra Chahal has also made it to the 18-member squad.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has been rewarded for his sensational run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy this season and Shikhar Dhawan have also been picked. Venkatesh Iyer’s rise in international cricket continues as he has been handed his maiden ODI
call-up.
Meanwhile, Washington Sundar has staged a comeback after a long injury layoff. At the same time, Ishan Kishan has been retained after being picked for the Sri Lanka ODIs. The three-match ODI series is set to commence on 19th of January at Boland Park in Paarl. The same venue will host the second ODI on 21st of January while the third and last match will be played in Cape Town on 23rd of January.
