Delhi Capitals on Wednesday returned to winning ways as they beat Rajasthan Royals by 37 runs in Match 30 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 to reclaim the top spot on the points table.
Chasing 162 for victory, DC restricted RR to 148 for 7 in 20 overs thanks to some outstanding bowling at the death by the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Ravichandran Ashwin and Anrich Nortje.
Debutant Tishar Deshpande bagged 3 wickets while Nortje took 2 and Rabada, Ashwin and Axar Patel bagged one each. Rabada maintained his streak of picking up at least a wicket in his last 21 IPL games in succession with this performance.
Deshpande was more successful than his senior teammates but it was the South African pace duo of Nortje and Rabada which most of the damage with the ball.
Nortje even managed to bowl the quickest delivery of the season at over 156kmph while Rabada continued his streak of picking wickets, with this being the 22nd IPL match in a row that he has managed to bag at least one.
Ben Stokes was Rajasthan's top-scorer with 41 while Robin Uthappa (32), Sanju Samson (25) and Jos Buttler (22) all got starts but couldn't convert them into a big score or even stay at the crease till the end which ultimately led to their
downfall.
Earlier, Delhi Capitals were restricted to 161 for 6 in 20 overs thanks to some outstanding bowling from Jofra Archer and Jaydev Unadkat at the start and in the death overs.
Archer picked up the wicket of the in-form Prithvi Shaw with the first ball of the match before getting rid of Ajinkya Rahane in his second over to get RR off to a perfect start.
Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan then stitched a partnership worth 81 runs for the third wicket which steadied DC's innings. Dhawan made 57 while Iyer scored 53 but the middle-order struggled to get the big hits in the final stages with DC managing just 32 runs from the final 5 for the loss of 4 wickets.
Archer ended up with 3 wickets for 19 runs from his 4 overs while Unadkat bagged 2 in the final over.
Rajasthan Royals will now have to win all of their remaining matches and then hope for some other results to go their way to stand a chance of qualifying for the playoffs. They are languishing in 7th place at the moment with just 3 wins from 8 games while DC have 12 from 8.
RR will next face Royal Challengers Bangalore in a day game in Dubai on October 17 while DC will meet Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2nd match on Saturday in Sharjah.
