Sunrisers Hyderabad lost their first 3 matches in an Indian Premier League season for the first time as they failed to chase 151 against defending champions Mumbai Indians in Match 9 of IPL 2021 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday. Sunrisers have never won a match in Chennai as they slipped to their 6th defeat at the iconic venue.
Sunrisers Hyderabad were bowled out for 137 in 19.4 overs after Jasprit Bumrah (1/14) and Trent Boult (3/28) came up with a death-bowling masterclass. Mumbai Indians rode on Rahul Chahar's brilliance in the middle-overs as the young leg-spinner picked up 3 wickets for just 19 runs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
raced to a strong start after David Warner reunited with Jonny Bairstow after the former champions made 4 changes to their XI. The duo added 67 in just 7.2 overs but Krunal Pandya broke the stand after a freak dismissal of Bairstow (22-ball 43).
Mumbai Indians were electric on the field as Hardik Pandya got the big wicket of Warner (34-ball 36) with a direct hit.
From then on, Sunrisers Hyderabad kept imploding as their inexperienced middle-order was put to test against a high-quality Mumbai Indians attack. Vijay Shankar (25-ball 28) waged a lone battle in the end but it proved too much for the all-rounder who faced Bumrah and Boult at the death overs.
