Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer, Trent Boult and R Ashwin played starring roles as Rajasthan Royals defeated Delhi Capitals by 57 runs in Guwahati on Saturday. While RR have now won 2 out of their 3 matches so far in the 2023 Indian Premier League, Delhi Capitals remain winless after 3 games.
The Royals hardly put a foot wrong after being into bat by DC captain David Warner. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler set the tone for RR with a rapid 98-run stand for the opening wicket before Shimron Hetmyer gave the team the finishing touches to the innings. Faced with a 201-run chase, DC needed something special from one of their batters but none of them could deliver. David Warner's half-century counted for little as his poor strike rate piled on the pressure for his teammates and they fell to poor shots.
Trent Boult destroyed the Delhi Capitals chase in the first over of the innings. He first removed Prithvi Shaw who was brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Sanju Samson and then trapped Manish Pandey LBW for a golden
duck.
Rilee Rossouw, at No.4, took 12 balls for his 14 before falling to R Ashwin as Delhi's chase completely lost steam. They needed to score at 10-runs-an-over and by the halfway stage of their innings, DC only managed to get to.
However, DC skipper David Warner became the third batter after Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan to reach 6000 runs in the IPL but that was little consolation for his team which is now winless this season after three matches.
While David Warner struggled to up the ante, Lalit Yadav scored briskly and gave DC a ray of hope. But Trent Boult returned for his second spell and dismissed Lalit to push DC back further. Axar Patel joined David Warner with the asking rate climbing sharply.
Much to the dismay of Delhi Capitals, Axar Patel found no kind of rhythm and he was soon outfoxed by Yuzvendra Chahal as Sanju Samson completed an easy stumping. Rovman Powell had no option but to attack R Ashwin; he perished in the process and DC were staring at their third successive defeat.
