England's star Joe Root ended his long wait to make his Indian Premier League debut as Rajasthan Royals gave the legendary batter a debut on Sunday, May 7 in their IPL 2023 match against SunRisers Hyderabad in Jaipur. Root was named in the XI as Rajasthan were forced to make changes to their XI after 2 successive defeats.
Joe Root enrolled himself for an IPL auction after going unsold in the past. The England batting star went unsold in the first round of the mini-auction in Kochi but he was bought by Rajasthan Royals in the accelerated round for Rs 1 crore. Root
expressed his interest to play the IPL, keeping in mind the ODI World Cup, which will be held in India in October-November.
Root arrived in India ahead of IPL 2023 and spent time with the squad as he did not get an opportunity in the first 10 games of IPL 2023.
However, Sanju Samson, who won the toss and opted to bat on Sunday, confirmed Joe Root's IPL debut.
Rajasthan Royals made a sea of changes as they brought in Root and Murugan Ashwin. They dropped Jason Holder, Adam Zampa and named only 3 overseas players in thier starting XI.
