Jasprit Bumrah has missed out on a place in the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy to be held from February 19 to March 9. The pacer couldn’t recover in time from his back injury before the eight-time tournament to be staged in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.
Previously, reports had suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would wait until the deadline day (February 11) for finalising their squad, and taking a call on Bumrah. Apparently, head coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar had discussed about Bumrah’s fitness before taking a call on his participation.
Earlier, there were doubts over whether Bumrah would make the cut for the mega event after the back injury he sustained during the Border Gavaskar Trophy. In the New Year’s Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, he had issues with his back after which he didn’t bowl in the second innings. Since then, Bumrah hasn’t played a
single competitive game.
Bumrah was picked for the three-match ODI series against Jos Buttler’s England, but he didn’t play in the first two games in Nagpur and Cuttack. Earlier on Monday, PTI reported that a dedicated team of three at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru had worked hard on Bumrah to get the speedster fit for the Champions Trophy.
The Indian team, in the meantime, had faced repeated questions about Bumrah's status, but neither the players nor the coaches could offer any updates.
