The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's ODI squad for the three-match series in South Africa with KL Rahul appointed as captain in the absence of the regular skipper, Rohit Sharma. Notably, Rahul was recently appointed as Rohit Sharma's deputy after Hardik Pandya was ruled out of the World Cup with an ankle injury. With Pandya expected to be out for 8–10 weeks, Rahul was asked to lead the squad in South Africa.
With Rohit and star batter Virat Kohli rested for the three-match ODI series, Shubman Gill,
the leading run-scorer for the team in 2023 with 1449 runs across 26 games, will accompany Ishan Kihan as an opener. The middle-order boasts the likes of Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav, both of whom have delivered crucial performances recently.
