The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has dedicated a stand at Eden Gardens stadium to legendary women’s cricketer Jhulan Goswami. The Block B gallery of Eden Gardens will be renamed in honour of the former Indian women’s team captain. Jhulan becomes the third person to have a stand named after her at this iconic cricket venue in Kolkata, following former BCCI and ICC President Jagmohan Dalmiya and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly.
The stand will be inaugurated during the T20 match against England on 22 January. Eden Gardens’ Block B, situated next to the dressing room and clubhouse, will also be redesigned to reflect the legacy of the legendary pacer, who is affectionately known as the Chakdah Express. Jhulan, hailing from a humble background in Chakdaha, a small town in the Nadia district of West Bengal, has been an inspiration to
many.
The CAB had been planning this tribute since 2022 but was awaiting permission from the Defence Ministry, as the land belongs to the Defence. The necessary clearance was granted on Tuesday, enabling the initiative to proceed. With this honour, Jhulan joins cricketers like Sourav Ganguly and Pankaj Roy, who also have stands named after them at Eden Gardens.
A CAB official said on Monday: “Jhulan is a legend, and it was only fitting that a stand be named in her honour. Now that permission has been obtained, the inauguration will take place on the day of the India-England match.”
In a remarkable international career spanning two decades, Jhulan Goswami claimed 355 wickets across all formats for India before retiring in 2022. She also contributed as a mentor in the IPL, further enriching Indian cricket with her expertise.
