Former India batter Sunil Gavaskar's mother passed away on Sunday morning, 25 December due to age-related issues. Meena Gavaskar, an influential figure in the upbringing of the Indian maestro was 95 years old.
Gavaskar was commentating in Dhaka in India vs Bangladesh's second Test match, and continued his duties in the fourth day of the Test match. Meena is survived by three children, Sunil, Nutan and Kavita, their children and their grandchildren.
Tributes poured in for Gavaskar's
mother from all across the cricketing community who joined the family in mourning. Gavaskar's mother used to help the right hander practice in his childhood and pushed to fulfil the dream of the young child.
Gavaskar would later go on to become one of the best batters of his generation and one of the all time greats India has produced in the Test format of the game. In the era where helmets were not an accessory, Gavaskar played with elegance, braving out incredible pace attacks from West Indies, England and Australia.
