Mumbai Indians have announced the signing of South Africa’s Under-19 World Cup sensation Kwena Maphaka as a replacement for the injured Dilshan Madushanka for the upcoming IPL 2024 season.
Aged just 17, Maphaka has become one of the youngest players to be drafted in the IPL with MI continuing their trend of spotting young and talented cricketers.
MI roped in the exciting talent for his base price of Rs 50 lakh. He replaces Sri Lanka left-arm pacer Madushanka, who picked up an injury and has been ruled out of IPL 2024.
Maphaka gained recognition in the
Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, where he was adjudged the ‘Player of the Tournament’ for claiming 21 wickets, which was the most by a pacer in the history of the competition.
The left-arm fast-bowler was instrumental in South Africa’s run up to the semi-finals of the Under-19 World Cup where they were defeated by India. Maphaka has been part of South Africa A and South Africa Emerging teams.
Sharing the dressing room with cricket stalwarts like Lasith Malinga as their bowling coach and India’s Jasprit Bumrah will ensure that Maphaka learns from the very best in the business.
