New Zealand spin-bowling all-rounder Mitchell Santner became the first player to pick a five-wicket haul in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. Santner’s spell helped New Zealand beat the Netherlands by 99 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Santner dismissed Max O’Dowd, Colin Ackermann, Scott Edwards, Roelof van der Merwe and Ryan Klein to complete his five-wicket haul in Hyderabad. With this performance, Santner became the first New Zealand spinner to pick a five-wicket haul in ODI World Cups.
Santner started off by getting rid of the opening batter, O’Dowd, early on in the
innings, catching him LBW in the 11th over. He then went on to dismiss the in-form Ackermann, who had already scored his 3rd ODI half-century.
Santner then dismissed Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards with some smart bowling. With Edwards going hard against Santner, the lanky spinner forced Edwards to go after a flighted delivery on the off-side, only to find a top edge which flew safely in the hands of the bowler.
Van der Merwe was the next wicket for Santner as the veteran all-rounder hit his reverse sweep at Matt Henry at backward point. He completed his five-wicket haul by getting rid of Ryan Klien, catching him LBW.
