England on Wednesday suffered a massive blow as Reece Topley was ruled out of their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign while Sri Lanka are sweating over the fitness of pacer Dushmantha Chameera.
Sri Lanka fast bowler Chameera, who featured in the first two group matches of first round, has suffered a grade two tear in the calf of his landing foot. The 30-year-old earlier missed the 2022 Asia Cup owing to a calf injury but was added to Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup squad after proving his fitness.
Chameera is now doubtful for the rest of the tournament but captain Dasun Shanaka confirmed on Wednesday that the star pacer would miss their final Round 1 match on Thursday.
Chameera played a crucial role for Sri Lanka in their 79-run win over the UAE in a Group A match on October 18. He returned with three wickets before suffering the injury in the last over of his spell as he
hobbled off the field.
Sri Lanka need a win over the Netherlands in their group match on October 20 to advance to the Super-12 stage of the T20 World Cup.
Meanwhile, Reece Topley has been ruled out ahead of England's T20 World Cup opener. The pacer rolled his left ankle during a fielding drill in Brisbane on Monday ahead of England's warm-up match against Pakistan at the Gabba, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stated.
On October 18, the ECB said: "He will be assessed throughout this week ahead of England's ICC Men’s T20 World Cup opening fixture against Afghanistan in Perth on Saturday".
Topley, who pulled out of The Hundred in August to remain fit for the T20 World Cup, featured in all three T20Is against the world champions Australia. His best figures for England came against India - 3/22 in T20Is and 6/24 in ODIs - earlier this year.
