India captain Rohit Sharma has reportedly not confirmed his availability for Mumbai's Elite Group A Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir, scheduled to begin on January 23.An official from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) mentioned that the selectors are expected to announce the squad on January 20, before which they will follow the standard procedure of confirming the availability of players.
Rohit is likely to be approached around this time about his decision on selection. "The selectors are expected to announce the squad on January 20, during which they will follow the due process of checking for the availability of every player. Rohit will also be approached around the time for selection," a Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) official told PTI.
Currently, the 37-year-old is striving to overcome a poor run of form with the bat, having scored only 31 runs in the three Tests he played during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Rohit was absent after a couple of initial practice sessions earlier this week but was spotted batting alongside Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday. He is expected to
resume training soon, though it remains uncertain whether the Indian skipper will feature in Mumbai's upcoming Ranji Trophy match.
Previously, Rohit handed over captaincy duties to Jasprit Bumrah in the last Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, leading to speculation about his future. However, he later reassured fans in an interview with the series broadcaster that he had no plans to step away from the game. Despite uncertainty surrounding his role as a red-ball cricketer, Rohit attended a review meeting on Sunday to analyse the team's performance. This meeting also included head coach Gautam Gambhir and the newly appointed BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia.
Meanwhile, India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has confirmed his availability for the next round of the Ranji Trophy and joined Mumbai's camp on Wednesday. Jaiswal had a batting session in the open nets at the Bandra Kurla Complex Ground earlier in the day. Ajinkya Rahane showcased his rich form during the training session with some precise shots off the pads, while Shivam Dube demonstrated an aggressive approach, dominating both pace and spin in his stint alongside the Mumbai captain.
