Sanju Samson has been fined 30 per cent of his match fees for his act of dissent against the third umpire's decision after he was adjudged out (caught) in the 56th match of the ongoing 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
"Mr Sanju Samson, Captain, Rajasthan Royals has been fined 30 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on May 07, 2024.
"Samson committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL's Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee's decision is final and binding," the BCCI's statement read.
Notably, the Rajasthan Royals captain was seen having a word with the on-field umpires KN Ananthapadmanabhan and Ulhas Gandhe after he was ruled out by the TV umpire Michael Gough.
The incident unfolded on the
fourth delivery of the 16th over when an aerial pull from Sanju was caught at the long on fence by Shai Hope. The West Indian claimed the catch but it was sent upstairs by the on-field umpires.
The third umpire looked a three to four different angles and then concluded that Hope had not made any contact with the boundary skirting in the act of claiming the catch and therefore gave his decision in the favour of the fielding side.
Sanju expressed his displeasure at the decision and even futilely attempted to avail DRS (Decision Review System). The incident also caused plenty of commotion in the Rajasthan Royals' camp as their Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara looked upset and was seen constantly checking the replays.
In the end, Samson was forced to return to the dressing room and the game continued to roll on.
Samson's wicket turned out to be the turning point in the contest as the asking rate went beyond Rajasthan's grasp after his dismissal and they eventually fell short of the target by 20 runs.
