After India was destroyed by England by 10 wickets in their semi-final at Adelaide Oval, Pakistani legend Wasim Akram pointed out that the Men in Blue have never won a T20 World Cup since the introduction of the Indian Premier League (IPL). .
“Everyone thought the IPL would be the big difference between India and other teams. IPL started in 2008. India previously won a T20 World Cup in 2007. Since the advent of the IPL, India has never won a T20 World Cup. They won a World Cup in 2011, but that’s 50 overs,” Akram said on A Sports.
India were eliminated from the group stage at the last T20 World Cup in 2021 and earlier this year they were unable to make it to the final stages of the Asian Cup.
Akram also questioned whether Indian players will be playing another overseas competition besides the IPL, or if that will make a difference in their approach.
Giving is tackling the issue, fellow panelist Shoaib Malik said: “Yes, it makes a difference, but IPL is big enough for young players to get that exposure. But playing in different conditions really makes a difference. If you go somewhere as an overseas player, they put extra responsibility on your shoulders. So that’s what it’s all about, where you become a good player. You think to yourself that as a foreign player the performance I
deliver must be in order. Second, you’ll share locker rooms with world-class players and learn from their work ethic. How they are so consistent, so I think there are so many elements that make a difference.”
Former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis said: “When the stakes are high, the pressure is high. I think IPL is a mega event. Many things are at stake. Big business people are involved. So it’s a huge company. Playing in such a mega event puts extra pressure on you when you start playing internationally. Then when you get to the knockout stage, you feel that burden on your shoulders. It was visible here, it was visible during the time they played with Pakistan in the UAE and also during the Asian Cup. They took the pressure and couldn’t really get on with the game. The freedom with which they play in the IPL is now apparent here. Rahul, Rohit, Virat, they all have ages, but today it seemed like they were in a shell.”
“The biggest point, however, is that the Indian batters could only score 41 runs from the English spinners, including a part-time spinner in 7 overs. No one could really handle them. I didn’t see any cross shots, even though the line wasn’t that long. They were just concerned. They should thank Hardik Pandya who scored runs very quickly. Without it, India probably wouldn’t even make 120 runs,” he added.
